Celebrating Our Past Chairs: Inspiring Leadership in Parent Education

Holly Hirshfield

Co-Chair: Fall 2018 - Fall 2020

"I love SPEAK SF's mission. I'm an educator and a parent so this was a fun new way to merge those parts of my life."

When asked about her experience, Holly reflected upon the way their co-chairs worked together to create an "effective inquiry process and timeline for choosing speakers," which led to "many great ideas and conversations among our board members." Her experience with SPEAK was inspiring, especially working with people "with different experiences all working to bring tools to improve parenting and learning." Holly emphasized, "the joy of SPEAK SF is creating a unique learning community" and a heartfelt thanks was given to everyone who helped "keep it alive."

"I'm passionate about parent education and I wanted to better represent our school parent community."

During her tenure as Board Chair, Nadya focused on increasing board engagement, especially early in the speaker selection process, noting that it allowed the board to "get better buy-in with broader input, research and shared decision making." She enjoyed how this approach helped the board "plan/book speakers farther ahead into the next season," and loved the connections made with other board members and parents across the member schools. Nadya’s advice for current Board Chairs? "Start speaker selection as early as possible and leverage the strengths of your board members to be fully engaged in the process. There is a lot of energy and talent on the board!" She also reflected, "While it took some work, it was a very rewarding and stimulating experience."

Merritt Richmond

"Our SPEAK Board was highly motivated, enthusiastic, and energetic. It was an easy group to rally into action, and we were excited about the opportunities to inform and inspire our school communities."

Merritt loved working with a fantastic co-chair and had fun bringing in renowned speakers such as "Julie Lythcott-Haims, Jo Boaler, and Rosalind Wiseman" to SPEAK. Merritt also valued how the board expanded host facilities to include more schools, saying it "felt collaborative and inclusive." She enjoyed engaging with other school reps and emphasized that leadership roles offer chances to "grow, learn, and expand my professional skills."

For future chairs? Merritt suggests, "find a good partner. Think broadly about what speakers you want to engage. Whenever possible, keep things simple."
